Northeastern’s program features an urban inclusion emphasis that is designed to develop community teachers: skilled, knowledgeable educators with an understanding of, and appreciation for, the diverse social and cultural values and concerns of their students.

Through deep exploration of the richly complex environments of urban schools and communities, Northeastern’s MAT programs instill in students an understanding of political, social, and historical perspectives on public education in America. These programs prepare educators to enhance the learning of ethnically, racially and culturally diverse groups of public school students--including students with learning and behavior disabilities--in urban and other districts where students have diverse learning needs.

The MAT program is designed specifically for aspiring teachers and career-changers seeking to advance their careers with minimal disruption to life and work. Programs leading to both elementary and secondary licensure are offered in either a full-time (12-month) or part-time (24-month) cohort format in which students take all their courses every semester with the same group of students. Convenient class schedules and hybrid course work (in-class and online) enable students to earn a graduate degree in education from a world-class university in as little as 12 months.

Special Scholarship Information for MAT- Secondary Students: The Massachusetts Mathematics and Science Teachers Scholarship Program provides tuition assistance to math and science teachers who are currently employed in Massachusetts public schools, but who have received waivers from certification regulations or are teaching outside their certificate area (out of field teachers). The program covers up to 100% of tuition and fees for teachers in high-need districts and up to 75% for teachers in other districts. The program covers up to three courses per year.
